This tri-band flip phone packs a whole host of hot technologies into a compact design. The SCP-8100’s has a built-in digital camera, which takes instant pictures in color, sepia tone, or black and white for display on the 1.8-inch color screen.

Users can view photos in QuadScreen thumbnail format and organize and store them in the picture album or assign them as picture IDs for contacts in the phone book. Users can also email photos to PCs or compatible devices and include captions, fun frames, and even voice messages with photos (for up to 10 recipients). A WAP 2.0 browser provides Internet access from remote locations and Java support lets users download and launch more sophisticated games and software programs. Some of the fun personalization features that come with the 8100 are photo, ringer, or color caller ID, which display the chosen method of identification on the large 1-inch, 65,000-color external LCD screen during an incoming call.

Users can also customize their rings to any of the 35 polyphonic tones, make their own screensavers, and personalize their answering machines. The phone book on the 8100 holds up to 300 entries with 500 phone numbers, 300 email addresses, and 300 Web site addresses. Other phone features include voice-activated dialing for up to 30 people, 20-number call history, automatic flip open and answer, and vibrating ringer mode. An electronic organizer offers a calendar and to-do list for scheduling and an included USB interface synchronizes data from the 8100 with a PC and vice versa (software sold seperately). Using a standard lithium-ion battery, the Sanyo SCP-8100 is rated for 2.8 hours of talk time and 10.7 days of standby time. With an extended lithium-ion battery, performance improves to 4.4 hours of talk time and 16 days of standby time.
